Special Edition Box Update + Photos

I’ve been asked so many questions about the Special Edition Box since it was announced, and even more in the last few weeks.

As some of you already know, I’ve been stalling while trying to find away around a huge road block: The box is flipping huge. Regardless of how little it weighs, the physical dimensions makes it very expensive to ship. To make matters worse, COVID has jacked up prices everywhere.

I’ve exhausted every available avenue. At the volume we’re printing at, there is just no way we can get it to you at a reasonable price.

To give you an idea, the absolute cheapest price I’ve been able to find is $55 USD shipping to the USA (other countries are even higher). That is an insane amount of money to pay no matter how much you love Mothership (and that is in addition to the price of the box).

So that means…the Special Edition Box will have to be shelved…for now.

I’m sorry for dangling it in front of you for so long!

But, does that mean you will never have an opportunity ever again to get the entire game in one box with fancy trays? Well…not necessarily…

The Future of Mothership

I’ve been working on the same game since about 2015. That’s a long time to spend on one project. Of course, one reason for this is the incredible love and support of you wonderful people. For now though, I need a break. But what about future expansions, boxes, apps…3rd edition?

As of right now, I have no plans to personally to helm a 3rd edition. But, I have been in talks with a publisher. I generally don’t like mentioning future plans that aren’t set in stone, but there is a promising chance that Mothership could continue to have a life beyond the 2nd Edition.

I’ve also learnt to never say never! 😅 The last time I said I was completely done it came back to haunt me…so maybe after a break, I could get back into developing the game further. Either way, if there is any news, you will be the first to know! Stay tuned 😉

Photos of the Box you can’t Order

The Special Edition Box was so far ahead in development that it was completely finished! On outside of the base, it included some amazing artwork by my wife Alkira: a full panorama that wrapped around the entire box.

I will continue to keep any eye open anyway to get this printed and shipped cheaply, but for now, we just have photos.

I’d say I’m a bit upset at talk of a 3rd edition. As a 1st edition KS backer (as well as 1st edition expansion backer), I was rather offended when the 2nd edition came out with rather minor gameplay changes, but enough to be incompatible with the first in terms of gameplay and with completely different graphics.

Now I was considering selling my 1st edition and expansions and upgrading to the prettier 2nd edition, but chanced across this and saw that you’re in talks with a publisher about a 3rd, which definitely put cold water on THAT plan. Errata, expansions, or second printings (of the same “edition”) are one thing…and it’s always nice when “upgrade” or “errata” packs are available for a fee or included with expansions…but I despise “new” editions which force people to rebuy the entire set AND older expansions just to keep compatible with future releases.

The same thing happened with Catan and Carcassonne (art styles changed in all content going forward) making my old collections graphically incompatible with new expansions. Eclipse did something similar with its “Second Dawn”. For those, I hunted down used copies of any missing “old” style expansions and declared my collection complete as was.

Hey David, I totally agree with you. I’m in the same boat when it comes to my favorite board games doing that to me as well. While I would jump at the chance to publish Mothership under another studio, it looks like that isn’t going to happen for the moment. So, your 2nd edition will be the last edition for quite a while yet.

  2. Patrick McKeon says:

I have to completely disagree with David on this. First, future editions do not obligate you to buy a new copy of the game if you are happy with you current one. Second, future editions that correct problems with previous editions means the developer is still paying attention to the game and helping it to develop and grow. Third, future editions mean that people that never even knew about the game, but stumble onto it (myself) might have the hope of owning it at some point, and not getting raked over the coal and gouged to death on ebay or other sites trying to gather the core game and expansions.

Personally, I hope there is a 3rd edition, or even a reprint of any edition with all the core materials and expansions in one place to get everything all at once.

Thanks for chiming in Patrick. At the moment, there’s still no plans to reprint…buuuuut we have been working on a brand new game that more or less carries on the same style of game.
